I'm done

I am quitting my job today.  I feel bad telling my boss Chris, but besides that I am excited about this decision.  I have been miserable at work, every day I come home from work and bitch about the way the company is heading.  My new boss does not want me to grow as a professional he wants to keep me in my place and make sure I do all the work no one else wants to do.  I don't think he even realizes how much I do here.  I created the Accounts Payable department from scratch.  On my first day I needed to contact a vendor to create our check stock since no one had even thought about it.  David will learn when I am gone how much I did, but that will not be my problem.  When Chris hired me he looked at my resume and noticed I had not stayed at one job for over 2 years yet in my career.  I told Chris during that interview I was ready to settle down and I was ready to stay the long haul with my next position.  I guess I was wrong, but at the time it was true.  I have been here for 18 months and the department I was hired to create is created and now it's someone else's job to see it through the next phase because no matter how much I try I am not being supported by the power that be.  I know Chris is unhappy at his position too, but unlike me he needs this job, he has 3 kids and two houses to pay for. I am lucky in that area since I am single and have very little debt.  I hope Chris understands.

Grad School

Today I registered for my first class towards getting my MBA in Sports Management.  While this is the first step in a long plan to reaching my goals it is a big one for me.  I am not a student in anyway, it takes me a long time to read and I learn best when listening to a lecture.  Doing my MBA via an online program means I will not have lectures to listen to so this will be hard for me, but like Adam Carolla said when he was voted off of Dancing with the Stars "Fear is the whole reason I'm doing it.  My life philosophy is if something scares you, you should do it.  Except meth.  Don't do meth, kids".  His interview always stuck with me and made me wonder if I was really challenging myself or just sticking with what I knew.  What scared me?  While my future MBA I could continue being an accountant hopefully working for a professional sports team, but is that what I really wanted?  While I really loved the statistics part of sports I could always volunteer doing stats while also working in the accounting office. I had been an official scorer for the San Jose Giants for two years when I lived in the Bay Area.  Those were great times and I really loved being at a live game and instead of being a spectator I was important.  I was the one who decided if the play was a hit or an error and these decisions could make a difference in the lives of the men playing in the game.  My favorite player while I was working their was Pablo Sandoval, who now plays for the San Francisco Giants and is both an All-Star and a World Series Champion.  I could see myself doing something on the statistics end, but would accounting be my other job within the organization?  Would a team allow me to do this?  I guess I will have to look into this a little more in the coming months.

Realization

What is a career?  Is it a job we do for money or is it a job we do because we have a passion that drives us to do it no matter what?  After  a decade of working as an accountant for a variety of different companies from Boston to San Francisco I was bored with my "career".  I looked in the mirror and knew the 10 year old me would not recognize the man looking back at me in the mirror.  What did I want to do when I was 10?  I always wanted to work in professional sports, but had applied to many accounting jobs in sports without ever receiving a call back.  It was time for a change.  Today is my 32 birthday, by this time next year if I am not closer to my future goals then I am a failure.
